Things are still pretty crazy around these parts, although not in a batshit-there's-really-no-need-for-this-way, but in a just plain hectic kind of way. I stupidly agreed to do extra hours last week given that we were ridiculously short-staffed, bit of an error on my part agreeing to four twelve hour shifts and one of my days off to boot since I'm utterly exhausted. Plus the majority of the extra money I earned will probably be taxed to hell. Hey ho, what are you going to do?
I spent all of yesterday slack-jawed and practically drooling in front of the DVD player. Perhaps Ulysses 31/Deadwood marathon might seem strange to some people, but it really worked for me. Just what the doctor ordered.
I found it really surprising that Ulysses still holds up really well. Okay, most of the dialogue is a bit rubbish and there is a hell of lot of overacting on the part of voice talent, but many of the ideas still hold up really well. It's definitely right up there with Dungeons and Dragons and Mysterious Cities of Gold in terms of classic cartoons from the 80s, though I suppose if you're getting your ideas directly from Greek mythology and then tweaking them, then you can't really go wrong. Anyway, it's really worth checking out if you're ever inclined to do so.
As for Deadwood, I'm still liking it but I'm not loving it. I'm not sure why. I think there might be a wee bit too much in the way of soapish elements for me to really get into it. I usually don't mind soapish elements normally, in Deadwood's case, however, I find it really jarring. To be honest, if it wasn't for Ian McShane's wonderful performance as Swearengen, I might have given up the show completely. As good as CJ is, she can't really carry an entire show by herself.
