His city’s dying a death.

 

As Batman he can identify diseases and viruses, quarantine them at Arkham or Blackgate.  Attempt to repair the damaged they’ve caused.   There are times he can, others he can’t.  Scars will always remain but through time they fade.

 

As Bruce, despite his power, despite his wealth, he can’t bring to an end to the rot.  He can’t stop businesses from going bankrupt, he can’t prevent others from leaving in their insatiable hunger for profit.  There aren’t enough donations to stem the blood loss.

 

It is a gradual demise.  Once proud, tall buildings now stand shadowed and ruined; old bustling neighbourhoods lie dormant, vacant and still.

 

Gotham is haemorrhaging, riddled with cancer. It’s crumbling, collapsing; a city slowly returning to the earth from which it sprung. 

 

Bruce can only see its beauty, faded as it is.
