...And it ticked all the boxes.

It was a really great film, probably one of the best superhero films in recent memory.  The script was much tighter this time around.  There were no embarrassingly  clunky borderline monologues to almost ruin the film, the dialogue flowed really well and there was a distinct lack of really cheesy one-liners.

The performances were excellent all round.  Special mentions go to Eckhart for a brilliant and likable Harvey Dent, and of course, Ledger for a chilling and charismatic Joker.  That scene with the fake Batman made me sit up in my chair, it was really uncomfortable viewing - in a good way though.  But as good as he was, I still don't think he deserves an oscar *ducks*

Bale was great as Bruce Wayne, but I still don't like his Batman voice and I mean really don't like his Batman voice.  There were times when it almost took me out of the film completely.  Not only that, there's something missing from his performance as Batman as well, an intensity that doesn't seem to be there.  I can't put my finger on it exactly.  But something doesn't click for me when he puts on the suit, not like it did with Keaton.  Ironic really, since I never really cared for Keaton's Bruce Wayne - but that wasn't really his fault.

As for Gyllenhaal, she was excellent with what she was given and I wasn't the least bit surprised with her character's fate.  After all, it's is the Nolan's we're talking about here.   The very same people who brought us Memento, Prestige, etc and who seem to be completely incapable of creating an intriguing female character that doesn't end up as the girlfriend in the refrigerator.  I really wish they'd learn a new trick.

All in all, and aside from a few niggles here and there, I really adored this film.  It was a billion times better than BB and I'm not sure how they're going to top TDK.  To be honest, I'm not sure if I even need to see another sequel.  TDK left me more than satisfied.

Oh, man, I love you review! It's exactly what I thought! Down to Keaton's Batman! O_o Your mind reading abilities are impressive! ;)

And, yes, sadly the Nolans cannot write women! I'd love a Catwoman in the 3rd film, if there was one, but it scares me what they'd do to her...

No, they can't. To be honest, I don't think you have anything to worry about on that part. I simply can't see the Nolans using Catwoman, Ivy, or Harley as a main villain in the next film.

I pretty much reckon they'll keep Gotham a boys club, which is fair enough, if not a little disappointing. Maybe if we're lucky we might get a non-offensive two-second cameo. :)
