Universe/Fandom: DCU

Word count: 448

Characters: Ollie/Green Arrow, JLA
Summary: He picked up a bow and arrow to make the world a better place; he settled for a part in a pantomime instead.

“… And I’ll be damned if you think I’m going to continue to uphold the ideals of morally bankrupt corporacy for one minute longer.” he says simply. A weight he never even knew existed slides from his shoulders as he begins to stand.

Ollie doesn’t have to listen to Clark’s reply to know what he’s saying. Ollie’s heard Superman’s speech about crossing the line so many times that he knows it by heart; repetition and variation makes it more meaningless and trite each time it’s made. But for the first time, and for as far back as Ollie can remember, he doesn’t feel frustrated or angry by it’s appearance.

Only tired.

Wordlessly he stares at the man of steel seated at the other end of the table and not for the first time sees only a naive little boy living in world of monotone, drowning in his own self-importance.

Ollie will never understand why Clark and the others don’t see that morality, justice and the law don’t necessarily have the same meaning. They live in a world where mercenaries operate freely without restraint; corporations destroy lives and trash the planet on a daily basis. They don’t notice it because it’s legal. It’s all above board and that’s good enough for them. It’s not good enough for him.

At this moment in time the only difference Ollie can see between the people running the world and the villains they consistently fight is a costume and a penchant for theatrics. In his mind the league’s failure lies bare for all to see.

He picked up a bow and arrow to make the world a better place; he settled for a part in a pantomime instead. He can’t do it anymore.

He can’t allow himself to idly stand by while multi-national corporations like Hydro-Power move into third world countries and charge its citizens for water that falls from the sky. Watch helplessly while the CEO steals food from the mouth of his employee. Do nothing when a security firm commits an atrocity in a far away land and gets away with it.

The Green Arrow has nothing left to say to these people. Everyone may think of them as the most powerful individuals on the face of the planet, but in reality they’re castrated; weakened by their own out-of-date dogma. The world and the real villains of the piece passed them by years ago.

With a parting glance at his former teammates, he turns on his heel, his purpose in life renewed. He barely hears Dinah calling his name as he leaves the Watchtower for the very last time.

Today he feels like a hero. Not a redundant actor in a pantomime.

Oh I like this. It feels a lot like on of the issues of Justice league Incarnations that played off JLA Year One.

It's OLLIE, and everything he stands for.

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for reviewing. I'm usually on very shaky ground when I leave the Bat-verse, it's nice to know it's not too awful and Ollie's recognisable at least:)

*flails* LUVITLUVIT! Seeing as how Ollie got his shtick from Robin Hood, it fits so well.

Only tired.

*nods* I get it. He's only been fighting the same fight for how many decades? For all the stick I give Ollie for his fat-cat rants and extreme leftwing rhetoric, it's Green Arrow more than anyone the world needs right now. Instead of whatever he's doing in his title, why isn't anyone would writing Ollie's reaction to the financial mess? Ollie vs the City and Wall Street, now that would make me buy a copy of Green Arrow & Black Canary.

Well done :D

One of the reasons I've never been able to get behind the character is because he's such a rip-off from Robin Hood and not a great one at that. But these days, sometimes I feel that's what the world needs right now.

If a different writer where on it I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Thanks for R&R. :)

Oh, this is an Ollie I like very much. It feels very organic, and very much like something Ollie would feel.

Yeah, I prefer this Ollie too. He's much more likeable when he's not being a jerk.
