Oh my goodness, lots of movies to pick from for 1981.

Seen as an actual small child:
Raiders of the Lost Ark was our first outing with Indiana Jones. Superman II is actually a very good sequel, and made me LOVE Terrence Stamp. On Golden Pond was a family outing with favorite aunt and actually began my love affair with Katharine Hepburn. Arthur is the Dudley Moore film I most remember, and possibly the only Liza Minnelli I have seen fully. The Cannonball Run is my beloved car racing comedy, though Gumball Rally actually ousted it as favorite.

For Your Eyes Only only left an impression of the music on me. The Four Seasons is the OTHER Alan Alda film I saw as a child, and AGAIN, the subject matter is not my cuppa. The Incredible Shrinking Woman was a Lily Tomlin staple for my movie loving self. The Great Muppet Caper, of course, was quite beloved and all of my muppet toys were from this one. The Fox and the Hound is one of my FAVORITE Disney animated films, and not a bad adaptation of the book. Zorro, The Gay Blade is one of those I loved as a kid and am afraid to rewatch as an adult.

Seen as a slightly older child or teen:
Heavy Metal, seen in Junior High after catching bits and pieces at cons through my childhood. I still enjoy several pieces of the anthology film.

Seen as an adult:
Excalibur may have been my first live-action Arthuriana film, as the only thing else I remember was a televised production of Camelot. Escape from New York is honestly one of my favorite Kurt Russell films; amusingly it was in theater the same week as The Fox and the Hound which also has Kurt in it. An American Werewolf in London was dutifully seen when An American Werewolf in Paris was coming out.

Honorable mention for I WANT TO SEE IT BUT HAVE NEVER FOUND IT:
Knightriders - I have a set of Boris Vallejo art cards, and seeing Ed Harris in armor on a motorcycle whetted my curiosity about this.

Actual favorite of this year? Clash of the Titans. Probably not the one any of you expected from me, but I watched this as much as I watched Flash Gordon and loved it even more. I have no ACTUAL memory of WHEN I started devouring mythology, but the love was well-established by this age (six), as I kept saying "THAT IS NOT HOW THE STORY GOES!" while eating up the stop-motion effects and loving Maggie Smith as Thetis. Just. It's the kind of movie everyone calls cheese, but MAN it fired my imagination and fed my need for stories of the ancient heroes.
